Gaming update

Still a little short on gaming time at the minute, but heres an update of my latest activity:

Star Wars: The Old Republic:

Currently have a level 16 Sith Assassin, slowly getting the hang of the game now. Spent a while running about with a colour crystal in my sabre that I was too 'evil' to use... Muhahah - meant my companion was doing most of the damage though. /facepalm. Geek fail right there :p

Skyrim:

Still keeping track of my adventures, should have the next installment up when I get round to typing up from my notes. Currently level 10.

UFO: Enemy Unknown:

When I have time to squeeze in a quick shoot about, I have had this game in the background. My latest adventure has been a pistol challenge on Superhuman difficulty. Currently a few research items from Cydonia... Have everything I need to get there, and have had 2 missions using plasma pistols and the last one with laser pistols. Before this it was allll normal pistols... They work well with a scout/sniper combo :)

More to come,

~Generic Seasonal Greetings!~

Merry Christmas to all :)

Been busy as hell prepping for the big day, now hopefully its a good relaxing, and moderately drunken one :D. Squeezed a little bit of time in on Star Wars tonight after polishing off to relax, and I am thoroughly enjoying the Sith Assassin with his double-light sabre :D

Xcom UFO Defense, and others: discounted on Steam

I am kicking about my parents tonight and have been unable to play Star Wars or Skyrim due to being on an old laptop instead of my desktop. I took a looksie on steam when talking to my dad about buying Terror From The Deep a few days ago... and seen that Steam has a sale on... all the games are discounted... Damn it!

If you have been considering getting one of these games - or even any other game that steam has for sale, it is a good time to take a look. Cheap cheap cheap!

Star Wars: The Old Republic, continued thoughts.

Sith Assassin, From Deadmanwalking182 at Deviant Art.
I have accumulated enough time in game now to hit level 10 and get out of the start area, and have moved to 'The Fleet' area. I must say, my experiences so far have proven to me that this game is pretty damn good. I played WOW from UK release day, until about 6 months ago. This game blows it out the water in pretty much every way so far. Only downside being the hardware requirements, my laptop will NOT run this game, and the increased level of complexity (steeper learning curve, but in no terms difficult for someone experienced with MMO's)

When I arrived at the flee, I was led to my next task... choosing which Sith path to take... This proved to be much tougher than I expected...

Sith Assassin: Dual-Bladed sabre, and the talent trees span down to Tanking, DPS (Rogue style) and another form of melee DPS

Sith Sorceror: Healing, or two forms of ranged dps...

I kinda wanted to be a healer, but I dont want to do that yet.. I ended up picking the Roguesque class... Apparently you can respec - but I think it is just a talent point reset.

A whole new array of abilities was unlocked upon seleting this, so I have two hotkey bars to use my powers - I am not sure if the initial ones are needed, but I still have them on the hotkey bar to move... Complicated - but Ill work it out next time I play. As a bonus, I got a goodie bag which contained my Dual bladed light sabre (no item level, I think these are like 'heirloom items' in that you keep the one as you level and can modify it as you go with the use of components and crystals to modify the buff effects.)

After this I also picked up my trade skills (3 gathering skills... it looks like gathering is done by companions on missions though... confusing much!)

Thats about as much as I have done so far... I heartily recommend anyone that likes MMORPG's to take a look at this. It is more demanding (computer and brain!) than World of Warcraft, but it is also more mature, and humorous in its own way. Server queues seem less of a problem now, although queues still exist.

Happy hunting!

Star Wars: The Old Republic - Initial Thoughts

So, The Old Republic officially launched this morning. I jumped on a RP server where most of my old gaming community from Star Wars Galaxies, and World of Warcraft: The Second Sun, are residing.

I joined the queue to get into the server at about 7:30 am, and had access by about 8:30am (queues galore just now, Im sure its an issue that will be resolved in due course, and hopefully not via a loss of customers) then rolled myself up a Sith Inquisitor. It seemed the closest thing to a Mage which is what I played in Wow as my main.

So far, I like it. It is definitely based on wow, but hugely improved. I really like the combat system, no targetting system, it plays more like an fps - there is no auto-attack, you point at a target and hit your attacks. You can click on a target to face them and attack - its all a pretty fluid and easy system.

Another thing I like about the game is the map. If you move when its activated, it becomes a transparent overlay, and you can actually run around with the map up. Nifty ^.^

I have not found any bugs or glitches so far (Perhaps with the exception of when I have my training-light-sabre out (Pressing Z - the controls are all identical to WOW) - it clips through walls, but never mind :D )

The graphics are ok, nothing spectacular. They are nice and clean, this PC has no issues running on max everything (560gtx graphics, AMD X55 processor and 8GB ram - 22" monitor at 1920*1080).

Aaaand... thats about it. Maybe Ill write another more in depth review once I spend a bit more time in game and level my char past 6 ^.^

Skyrim: Velk's journal - Part 1. *Contains spoliers*

As previously mentioned, I wanted to keep an in-character game journal, much like Arwen. It will contain spoilers, I have no intention of editing thme out, if you dont want to see them, please don't read. I am a veteran of Morrowind and Oblivion, so I am going to try my best not to use any exploits I find in the game, Im likely also going to stick fairly close to the main quest line with this character, and explore all the fun to be had with guilds when Im not trying to keep notes as I go! And with that over with: INTO IT!

*****

I awoke, with no memory of where I am, or why I am here... I was in a cart, being transported in convoy with what appears to be prisoners. Ulfrik Stormcloak introduced himself to me. A few others rode beside us... We arrived at a keep soon after... One by one the prisoners were lead forth to be given their last rights before... before being beheaded. I was not on their list, but nevertheless, the captain ordered that my head should be removed along with the others...
The first man hurled taunts and insults at the guards, and was promptly dispatched. The lucky one. A freshly sharpened blade took his head in a single stroke.
By now, eerie sounds could be heard echoing from the mountains... but it made no difference... I was next. Perhaps the sounds were my own imagination as I stared death in the face... As I lay my head on the block, some strange beast flew in from behind the keep, and landed on a rooftop, and started raining fiery death to the village. A Dragon!
AArrgh! Death!
I made my escape with Ulfrik, into the keep with a few other injured survivors...
We made a break across town, and I met with Hadvar, the guard that tried to bargain for my release with the leader at the executions, and we headed into the Keep, and made way through catacombs.
We fought our way through a number of Greycloaks that decided they fancied some hostile negotiations, but we managed to fight our way through and out the otherside. When we got out, the dragon flew right over our heads and over the mountains in the distance...
Spot the dragon!
we watched the Dragon fly off into the distance. Hadvar informed me the local town of Riverwood would be a good place to shelter, so we headed off along the path. He pointed out an old ruin, and we paused at some blessing stones.
Thieving time!
We then continued heading on towards the town, being halted briefly by a pack of Wolves, though they were easy to dispatch with my bow, and Hadvar's sword.

We entered the town of Riverwood where Hadvar and I met his father, Alvor. We went inside his house to talk...
Alvor and his wife
I talked to Alvor in length about assistance he needs. Soldiers from Whiterun seem to be his prime concern, he told me a little about Whiterun and the Jarl - this may be tricky, he is quite opposed to the war, although he doesn't side with anyone, it may make it tricky to coerce him to assist...
I spent a little while milling about, cooking some Cabbage Apple Stew, and sharpening my weaponry at the blacksmiths and had a brief run around town. It was dark now, and a full moon was out.
The mountains at night. Pretty. Dangerous. Hide.
I decided I want rest, and somewhere to sell all my loot, but Alvor and his family had been hospitable enough, so I headed to the Sleeping giant inn. Hopefully I can get some rest, a clean and some coin for my troubles. After coughing up 10 gold pieces, I rested for the night. Whiterun can wait until tomorrow... I need rest, lest I will fall to another wolf pack and never even get the alert out!

*****
Thats it for now folks - I did not get much time to get into the game as I am still in the midst of studies, but the more notes I get, the more I shall post :) My thoughts so far: plotline seems good, the game is very immersive. Full HD on a 22" screen, with headphones on makes it very immersive, and I love the water and the atmosphere, especially walking through the valleys and looking up at the misty peaks above! :-)

Xcom: Enemy Unknown - aka, Xcom UFO Defense...

Studying hard for the exams I am in the midst of, but I have my distractions...

Namely You Tube.

I have been watching SillyGoosesinc's 'Let's Play X-Com' videos, they give me giggles.

I also found this article on Ufopedia...

DC Universe Online. Mini Review

In amongst my studies, I have been downloading DC Universe Online. I heard on The Instance that it had gone free to play. Naturally... I decided to check it out. I dont promise a well written or article with any real aim other than to waffle on about what I have done and my thoughts on the game ;)

After installing, I hit the character creation process... I felt brave and selected PVP server, then Villain. Why? I dont know, I always play the good guys and I thought it would be an interesting twist. Plus, I got to choose The Joker as my mentor, and the entertainment value of such a thing just could not be ignored! Superman? Bores me. Batman? Bores me. Huntress? Who the hell are you?

Catwoman? Yes plx. The Joker? Yes plx. Lex Luthor ... o.O ... ok, sure whatever.

Next up I chose my starter abilities, I took the ability to fly which seemed a no-brainer, and "magic damage" because if I remember correctly it had properties of being a healer and I thought it would be nice to be able to heal or be a group healer if such content is in this game, which it seems it is.

I then chose my costume... yeah... Its all very customisable, but I chose something simple... a two tone stripey green and red spandex suit. Go team camp! On a  big plus - all the armour bits you collect in the game customise to match your colour scheme - so no fugly armour parts or clown suits (unless you wish to make it so) like in WOW.

I have never really been big into the DC comics, so it comes as a nice touch that despite my lack of knowledge, the game fills you in on the characters back stories. This is evident in your first "warehouse" where at the end of it you learn a little bit about who The Huntress is.

Storywise, it is amusing me and keeps me coming back for more.

Gameplay is rather unusual compared to other online games I know. For a start, the game is also available to console players which results in some interesting mechanics. I have noticed that you dont need to be a great aim to hit your targets, and that you can "lock" onto a specific target so that you are attacking it regardless of what you are doing on screen. This is quite handy if you think you will be confused by the environment. A downside to this is the way the "combo-moves" work. When you gain skillpoints you spend them in various talent trees for your abilities (or to learn new abilities) and as you gain new abilities they are activated with different combo-buttons. In the case of the PC where I am playing it, a left mouse button tap is a melee strike, a right mouse button tap is a ranged hand-blast. Holding the right mouse button unleashes a charged bolt. Holding it down twice supposedly fires a meteor, but I dont know if that works. Holding the right mouse button and tapping the left twice is supposed to boot a fireball at the enemy... so far I have not seen any of these combo moves do anything different, but I will persevere.

I am level 7, and have maybe accumulated 3-4 hours in game, flying about, doing missions, giggling at the dialogue and taking part (albheit mainly as cannon fodder) in some of the pitched PVP battles that break out.

It appears there is only 30 levels in the game, but I dont think this is a bad thing, it means a band of lowbies like myself can wither down a level 30 and kill them despite their toughness or ability to one-shot half of us.

At this point in time I would rate the game as follows:

Story: 7/10 (The plot is odd, or maybe completely irrelevant - Im not sure, but thats not a good thing is it! - but mission plot and the story info you gain from them is well implemented.)

Graphics: 7/10 (I play at max everything. Graphics look good, not awesome, and there are some niggles, but its pleasant to look at.)

Gameplay: 7/10 (good but not perfect. Again, some niggles in how things work, but it seems a solid concept.)

Entertainment Value: 8/10 - Im in the early game, and despite getting ganked, Im enjoying exploring something new again.

Overall 7/10 - I might enjoy the game if/once I have time to get into it more, and perhaps partake in group activities. I know a bunch of friends that play this game so it seems to be fairly popular. Overall - if you have not tried it, it is free to play so give it a blast! You might be pleasantly surprised. If not - at least you just enjoyed a few hours of your very own action hero movie :p

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Pre-amble to a write up...

"That's a bit of an odd topic title!" I hear you cry, and alas. I concur. As a self confessed geek, I feel I need to be deducted some geek-cred for not having a copy of Skyrim yet.

The reasons are many, among them there is university studies - Im busy as all hell until about the middle of December, and the abundance of Death that has happened around me and Kat in the last month has thrown us off course a little (AKA, a metric Fuckton.) As a result, I am heavily commited to getting coursework done and out of the way before I risk gaming addiction on the level that this promises to enforce...

In an attempt to compensate for this, when I finally get to indulge in the game I am going to do a couple of things:

Firstly I am trying to get my mits on a second monitor to help simplify my working experience. The new one shall be bigger and better for gaming which will enhance the experience I hope.

Secondly: I am going to try to keep a written log/journal of my characters adventures and randomness. I shall refrain from giving away main-quest info or spoilers (Or I might focus on the main quest and just give a write-up as if it was a journal from my character... that could be cool.) - I know I have been trying hard to find a few blogs/sites that provide this fix for myself without giving too much of the game away with little success.

As for now... well... Importance fact at the moment :: life > game

Crysis 2: Useful links

During my run throughs of Crysis 2 (3 completions), I found an array of useful links for various bits of information.

Here is a links list to the more useful ones I found :-)

Guide Site Note
Weapons Guidegamershell.comAn interesting read about the power and uses of various weapons. This particular guide also discusses tactics and enemies you will encounter
Collectables Guidemsxbox-world.comI only found 2 dogtags and a statue by myself... checking the guide on entering a new area helped me know where things were hidden to find them. Collected on 3rd walkthrough - Im not that much of a kleptomaniac to search every area for these things ;-)
Walkthroughgamefront.comI recommend flying blind, but if you just cant see the exit to an area, it can help

I hope they prove as useful to everyone out there as they did to me :)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

With this game looming over our heads and the hype surrounding it, I thought I would look into it a bit more. I have loved TES games since Morrowind first came out - back then I didn't even have a computer or graphics card powerful enough to run the game beyond the most basic effects.

On the site - http://www.elderscrolls.com/ - there has been a new video put up since I was last on there - a making of clip, that will be included in a making of DVD in the collectors edition.

Ultimate dragon fighting game
Ultimate warrior game
Ultimate mage game
Ultimate thief game
Ultimate assassin game.

Yep - they have a lot of ground to cover! I thought they done quite well in Oblivion. I am hoping that the engine etc has been knocked up a notch since then, since looking at Oblivion now it looks sadly dated. The good news is that from the clips - it does look like it has changed! Maybe not as much as I was hoping for, but maybe having a new computer Ill be able to run everything to its full potential anyway ^.^

Im looking forward to being able to just explore a huge open game world again. How thorough should I be? Who knows! I would like to finish this one - since I didn't actually finish Morrowind. I think I got half-way up the mountain at the end then formated my PC or something... fun times!

I shall certainly detail in here what I get up to in it anyway, once I get round to buying it...

Journals! (Of the diary variety, amongst others.)

This topic might be a bit controvertial for geek-value, but Im in the mood to write about it and its my blog so... deal with it. Read it or skip it :p

So... since I was little, I have kept some sort of diary/journal... I feel kinda silly each time I actually think about it, but at the same time it is kinda fun. People keep journals of all sorts of things. Work journals, project journals, etc etc, to keep track of what they are doing and the goals they are seeking to achieve in such things which is all very valid. But what about every day life?

I keep work journals when working, project ones when working on projects (such as my honours project), and I have kept a couple of holiday journals (More specifically me and Kat's honeymoon journal (nothing dodgy!) which is kept on display in the living room and that we occasionally flick through to reminisce)

From about 1991 I have kept a written journal of sorts. Admittedly, every time I take a look at one of these diaries from my childhood - it is embarassing... The crap I would waffle about beggars belief, but it helped my writing skills immensely and gives me something to look back on and reminisce. I was inspired by the likes of Sue Townsends Adrian Mole diaries (at least, the earlier ones. The later ones were too depressing to read.) and some other comical diaries like Mr Beans diary and "The Log" from Red Dwarf.

From about 2002 onward I decided to keep an electronic diary. I don't put entries in it often, I would guesstimate I put an entry in, on average, once per week. Sometimes it can be a month before I put in an entry, other times I can have a straight week where I update it daily.

So, lets be analytical. What are the advantages of keeping a diary?

Well, firstly - its a scrapbook of your life. I find that when I have partaken in an event, be it family, holiday, or just a random day - that by writing about it, I remember it better - and when I look over old diaries I can remember the day clearly. This goes back as far as the diary I was writing in when I was 9 - so almost 20 years ago.

Secondly - if you need to vent somewhere, or get your thoughts down, then it is a good outlet. I find when I look back at half my entries, if they are not a "log" of activities on a day or from an event, they irritate me... but I have them down and it helps me analyse things that have happened, or why I feel a certain why, or am affected by something in a certain way. It irritates the shit out of me when people "Emo-book" - basically putting a status up on a social site like Facebook to get attention then hiding from the responses whilst most likely keeping an eye on them to judge your self-worth/pity. That's what I use one of these for! I don't need the attention, I need the outlet or Ill go putting my fist through walls, head through windows.

There are some other advantages that I wont go into detail with, such as helping remember things if your short term memory is shot by updating it as things happen, etc etc.

Disadvantages?

People will read it. No shit sherlock - its human nature - if you have one of these and someone gets their mits on it, they WILL read it. Get used to it. If you want something that is truly private, keep an electronic copy, and password it up tight. But moreso, get used to the rule of self-censorship. There are some things that shouldn't go down, because Im sure there are certain circumstances where you would have to provide it as evidence or something in court by law, or you may leave the document open.

I remember when I was younger, my sister would keep sneaking my diary away to read it, and tease me occasionally on its contents, and more recently I found out my mother read it aswell. A bit embarassing, but also a giggle since I would never keep anything so serious in there that I would get in trouble for it...

Another disadvantage could be the time constraints and the "whats the point" factor. How often are you going to read it? Are you EVER going to go back and read it? Why put in the time?

Well, time commitment is minimal, you can sum up a day in a 30 second paragraph if needs be, or you can go into as much detail as you like (memory is cheap! Same cant be said for the paper diaries I used to keep!). You may find you appreciate the effort later on, moreso for being a log of important or special events that happen in your life, but it is also nice to just read back over a normal day and contrast yourself to then and see how much you have changed. (Its usually a good thing in my experience!)

So what about other aspects of keeping a log/journal/diary?

Co-authoring: Not a good idea for a "diary" - but it can work quite well as a log of activities in, for example, a holiday journal. Co-authoring could work in the instance of short term memory loss. I think it would be a fantastic day for family members visiting a relative with dementia/alzheimer's to make a little journal entry of their visit for the relative they are visiting to go over once they have left, perhaps updating it with images etc remotely.

Remembering loved ones? Pictures, remembering activities you done? Everybody's gotta go someday... it may make you sad to read about activities past, and see pictures, but I would rather that than have no way to remember them.

But yeah, I think I have waffled on. What can I say? I keep a diary! I have done for 20 years! No you cant read it. So:
fuck you! ;-)
Anyway - the majority of what I would say in a diary nowadays goes on facebook for friends and family to see, nothing really special is kept in it - its simply a log, where I can keep some scrapbook-esque pictures, notes and occasionally bitch to myself about whats pissing me off with life. The venting helps!

I recommend you try it ^.^

This is Halloween!

So halloween is here again!

I must say I have had a fantastic weekend - Veriatease halloween burlesque/variety on Friday night, supported by the Cha Cha Heels and Merkin, Kage nightclubs halloween party and then a Kiddy halloween party yesterday.

Only downside is me getting this dang sulphery burp stomach bug... AGAIN. So woke up yesterday throwing up the re-heated chippy I ate when we got in.

Either way, Happy Halloween all, Happy SamHain too!

Crysis 2: Post Human Difficulty

So...

I just completed the game on the hardest difficulty setting. I must say, I found it significantly more fulfilling than my last run through, at least achievement wise. Place a foot wrong, and your dead. Following the Stealth Tactics of my previous post, I found much of the game (whilst not fast paced like doing a run and gun session) to be fairly easy. There are a number of areas where I had to reload numerous times because of silly mistakes - and one or two areas where Im SURE there are more enemies than easier difficulty modes, to the point that I opt to sneaked through the area and not trigger a fight. On the other hand, there were other areas where I found it more fun to eliminate every enemy by baiting them, relocating, charging them in melee, and just generally having a giggle.

Edit: The final battle... *Spoiler. Text in black - highlight to read.*
***I inadvertently cheated the last fight. I tried to stealth kill the final bosses, but I screwed up and clubbed the guy I was trying to take out instead, and promptly legged it - fell off a cliff, and got stuck behind a car... It just so happened the car blocked most of their lines of fire, and stopped them getting within melee range, so I unloaded My K-Volt at the 3 attakcing me there, killed them all, and hunted down the last and took him out. First try. It feels like cheating when an exploit surprises ya like that ^.^ ***

I dont know if I will play through it again... at least any time soon. The gameplay is addictive, Ill give it that... but I need to study more! Its to effective a distraction :p

Batman Arkham City & Steam

So whats the dealyo, yo?

Got a voucher to get the game for free with my graphics card. Sweet. Game gets the release date moved from the 21st to the 18th. Sweeter.

Im sat here on the 22nd with Steam proclaiming "not yet released"...

Fine, I dont actually give a crap about playing the game at the moment, I have way to many things to focus on... but... come on - whats going on? Anyone else have this problem? I STILL aint used Steam for getting games - this is my first... may well be my last if its as effective as its proving it isnt...

EDIT: To update: Apparently its not coming out on the PC until next month. Dont I look/feel a nubbin! :p

Crysis 2: Stealth tactics

This post is more than likely going to be poorly constructed waffle, but I am currently going through the game as previously mentioned on the hardest setting. Tactics are vital, and using all the tools in your arsenal as designed is critical. I am going to discuss in the following post, a number of Stealth tactics that I have found to be useful:

Disclaimer: Some of the tactics below are not for everyone and some of the strategies may be arguable, but this is just my take on the game and tactics I find work for me ;)

Suit Mechanics:
Firstly, lets talk about the stealth mode. In stealth mode, you are invisible, and your footsteps are muffled. Opponents will still detect you if you move a lot near them, especially if your directly in front of them. I would recommend one of the first Suit Upgrades you get be the Stealth Enhancer, as the duration of Stealth mode is extended significantly.

A few tips for stealth mode:
1) DONT USE ALL YOUR ENERGY. If you run out of energy, you are visible. If your visible, you dont have energy to enhance your armour. On diffcult modes, without quick reflexes and a good aim - this usually means a reload screen is imminent.
2) Locate cover. Situational Awareness is key - if you have played through on an easier setting before hand, this is all the easier. Try to identify where your enemies are, (Battlescape view and tagging enemies makes this a little easier, but dont rely on tagging all the enemies, most arrive on the battlefield after you have commenced battle and the corpses pile up.) and make sure you can find some cover to try to pick them off with silenced attacks, or "pop-up attacks".
3) Relocate. If you reveal yourself and are spotted, or a body lies near your cover, the enemy will come investigate or commence fire on the general area. Unless your baiting the enemy to come to you for melee or point blank take downs, you might want to pop out of cover and relocate.

Silencers:
Silencers are extremely useful for a stealth run, though not essential depending on the approach you wish to take, especially if your using a gun that is powerful enough to perform an effective "Pop-Up Attack" as discussed later. With a silencer, you can fire off single rounds from most guns whilst maintaining stealth. This is great for peeling health off Ceph by shooting them in the Jelly, or for headshotting human opponents.

The best weapon for this is the Nova as you can get off a half a dozen shots and move back into cover to regenerate your energy. Later on, the Hammer or a silenced Scarab in single-shot mode prove good substitutes. I would bypass the hammer in favour of the Scarab since the Reflex scope or Ranged scope make for very easy targeting of opponents that are further afield. If you screw up - you can tap full auto mode and try to finish the target off.

Pop-Up Attack
To perform a pop up attack you simply uncloak and fire of the shot or burst, then re-cloak. You momentarily give your position away to anyone looking in your direction, so it is likely you will need to relocate after performing this attack a few times. If you have a silencer, you will have more time and can effectively kill a majority of the targets in the field like this. Without a silencer, I find the most effective way to use this is  something more powerful, in single fire mode (or in burst if you feel the need to ensure that target is dead.). Uncloak - head shot/burst - recloak. if your quick and have the stealth upgrade, your visible for such a short period of time your often un-noticed, save the sound of un-silenced weapons giving you away.

Sniping
With a silencer and willingness to relocate - the G1 sniper rifle can be put to awesome effect. Its best to perform a pop-up attack, or you are left with your nuts swinging in the breeze when half the map turn and start blasting at you. A silencer will buy you some time before the enemy can locate you. Plan your targets, and enjoy! One of my favourite past times is finding a good spot to empty my ammo supply from. Without a silencer it is still possible, but expect to have to relocate often.

Relocation
Fairly simple and self explanatory: When your position is compromised, move to another location! Ideally with some cover and your line of site blocked to recharge your energy when you get there.

Advanced Relocation
Revealing your positon to the enemy (preferrably by de-cloaking and taking out an enemy of two with some pop-up shots) can be a good strategy, and is one of my most oft-used tactics. The enemy will start firing on your position, and in the case of the Ceph, will converge on that position. You will be under spray-and-pray fire when you get up to move, but dont worry as unless the enemy strip your energy, they cant see you - just keep moving. By relocating at this point it is possible to find some isolated targets, or flank the enemy forces and with good use of Silenced stealth kills or pop up attacks, you can eliminate most/all of the enemy forces. I particularly like placing some C4 in the baited area or lobbing some grenades from my new spot once the enemy have gotten to my last known position. Blissful giblets flying through the air is a sign of success! :-)

Run & Hide
If your caught out in the open - or don't have enough energy to get to cover - don't be afraid to drop cloak in favour of shields or a momentary recharge and gun and run. If you can take out some targets in the few seconds whilst waiting get some energy back - you will want to use the regenrated energy to activate your enchanced armour and sprint to some cover... (that is unless you get enough to cloak relocate) then quickly regenerate your energy and attempt to relocate. This is very similar to advanced relocation in that your going to be under fire, so be quick!

Silent Kill
If you can find a target on its own, or flank a group and none have you in their field of view, you can perform a silent kill. As an alternative, you can do the grab&jab mentioned below. A silent kill works on any target without a shield, or that is not massive. (Heavies, Pingers and shielded commanders I think are the only ones immune to this.)

Grab and jab
This is actually my preferred version of a silent kill. You grab the target whilst cloaked. This works wonders if the target is advancing on your position, or knows you are there and is running at you. (Im looking at You Ceph assault troops!) You simply grab the target, and can then perform a silent Kill. This method drops you out of cloak like a silent kill, but only for the moment you perform the grab. The time exposed is less than that of a stealth kill, and you can move as soon as you have grabbed the target, just in case someone DOES see you exposed. If behind cover, you can grab the target from the cover your hiding behind as it comes to investigate, and execute it out of sight of its comrades.

I found this tactic to great effect on one section of the game - a large area quite early on after meeting the Ceph - and there are some dozen or so targets. On the first run through I shot them all, and made it through with 8 scarab bullets left... This time round I used a single clip. I shot from the balcony and the target would then come over to investigate where the shot came from. I stood by the side of the doorway and grabbed the target as it moved through the door. In some cases 2 or 3 came to investigate and I managed to pluck and stab them as they came through the doorway. By the end of it all I had a bloody pile of rotten Carcasses by the side of the door and did not take a single hit.

A few donts:
1) As mentioned before - DONT run out of energy. When the crap hits the fan you will need to quickly hide and relocate, or will need to activate your enhanced armour lest you become goo on someones boot.
2) Dont be afraid of melee... I find a majority of my killing blows come from close combat, or stealth kills.
3) Dont fire an unsilenced weapon stealthed. It strips all your energy and your life expectancy is greatly reduced...
4) Dont fight from the Open - unless there is somewhere to hide behind, sheer weight of fire will kill you fast on the higher difficulties, or will force you into enhanced armour mode, which on a stealth run is a last resort. You dont want to be caught in a gunfight, you want to know where the enemy are, and for them to NOT know where you are.

If you have anything to add, dont hesitate to comment below and the "guide" can be amended.

Crysis 2: In review

After a fairly stressful few weeks, being ill, loaded up with uni work and not being able to focus on anything, I picked up Crysis 2 and gave it a whirl. This is going to be a mini-review, but I shall start by saying that this game: is EPIC!

My first play through must have taken in excess of 30 hours, and it was fairly non stop action/storyline. I played it through on the second hardest difficulty mode (Hey, I wanted a challenge!) - This did not prove to be a bad choice, the AI is very good, the game is NOT a walkover, but there are enough areas in the game where you can just go Banzaii and lay waste to everything, as well as a good balance of areas where you HAVE to be strategic (I refer to Pinger boss fights, and the Seph guardians that kick about.)

The plot is good - it seems to a generic "Ahh were doomed" plot line based in New York - but the whole damn thing just feels so atmospheric, and gets the adrenaline pumping. Something I have not experienced since FEAR and Doom3 (Loved FEAR, Doom 3 bored me cos Im not into horror/suspense gaming.)

Graphics: Beautiful, I never played the original Crysis - the last thing I played that had flashy graphics was Probably Far-Cry... (WOW doesn't count right? :p)

Re playability? Well - I finished the game, and I immediately restarted on the hardest difficulty setting... I started off with access to the same weapon and suit mods that I had upgraded through the first walk through - though I don't seem to be able to upgrade the suit any further - perhaps a bug, but it matters not because I have the only suit mods I use already active. I am roughly 1/4 of the way through, maybe closer to 1/2 but I have probably played a good 10 hours on this setting... I have been doing a stealth run, and the change in game play brings some awesome challenges. The first run through I was learning the ropes - now I find myself boldly stepping up to most things, grabbing them by the throat into cover and inserting a knife into their face. Ill probably do a stealth guide as my next post, because it is just so much FUN!!!

Back to Uni...

So - here I am sat in the library of the university of Dundee - twiddling my thumbs...

I am about to venture forth into the 4th year of my course. My wife has just matriculated and is starting a Psychology & History course here aswell - so I have been in and out of the university over the last couple of days sorting stuff, finding stuff out... This morning I had an Induction that is required if you want to do lab tutoring. I think my skills are very inefficient when it comes to actually trying to help people in labs, but there seems to be a shortage, and I dont mind trying to help others whilst also expanding my own knowledge on the subject in question. Im kind of looking forward to it even, if it means I can help others get through some of the evil labs!

I also had a meeting regarding my honours project and got some more information on what the objective of the project is, and a reading list - altohugh, conveniently the library has not got a single book in that I want to borrow.

My internship ended a few weeks ago and I have been working on the final report (a min 5k word document covering what I done, and a 10 minute presentation.) which is coming along slowly. The kids are both in nursery full time - which should make this semester the easiest with regards to ability to atend and time to sit down and get on with solo or group work... I just hope that my lack of ability to attend last year and the year before has no hampered my grounding knowledge too much.

Anyway, looking forward to getting started - Im sure I will have many an interesting blog post to put up as the course gets underway and I get some new stories.

Bleh, so tired.

I creep in my blues into the seedy underbelly of the city of Lost Angels...

I purchased a 2nd hand copy of LA Noire off a mate as I was curious to give it a go. I finally got round to firing it up last night and popping my Noire-Cherry.

First impressions:

Excellent graphics - up until shadows and sprites appear anyway, then it looks a bit iffy, but that could be cos Im playing on a 37" screen which is a bit sub optimal for 1080P - I may give it a go on the 42" in the living room as thats supposed to be the ideal screen size for 1080P - Or so I read, once upon an ethos.

The facial system is good - very good. I kinda expected something a tiny bit better, but also kinda expected something a lot worse. It makes the game look much more movie-like - its one of the appeals for the game - Im a big fan of the TV series "Lie To Me" and read that some of the crime solving you have to do is to pick out the microexpressions etc on peoples faces for telltale signs of guilt, etc.

The layout of the city reminds me a lot of GTA4 - so I think that is a big plus - it seems there is a very detailed city scape that you can explore. Perhaps there are random crime scenes, etc - Im not sure yet. I have just solved my first case, and just started on the mission that starts with you on the beat.

My biggest concerns so far for the game lie in two areas:

Complexity. There is a lot of notes kept in your notebook. I imagine further in this will become quite a jumbled maze... time will tell

Boring. Strong terminology - but the game has not gripped me or done anything super interesting yet. CSI and the likes have never really been my cup-of tea, although I do enjoy a good mystery from time to time. There has not been much action save a couple of punch-ups and some driving about the city. Hopefully as I get some more gametime in I will get more into it and the plot will grip me. Heres hoping! Im sure Ill post again on this game soon.

Geekgasm! : Planetside 2.

Planetside 1: Vanu Sovreignty
Planetside 2: NC and the Terran Republic.
So... Planetside 2...

I so cannot wait... Planetside is my 2nd longest played online game. (MMORPGFPS? MMOFPS may be more accurate, the roleplay aspect is simply that of having character advancement and a side of a conflict to fight for.) I made many friends in that game, and I have many occasions where I wish I could just log on and play like I did back in the day!

After watching the trailer at the above linky... I am stoked, I WANTS IT NOW!!!

Google+ - Some comments and some linkies :)

I have been playing about with the Google+ beta - and I am quite enjoying it. At its most basic function, it is Facebook with some extra features, a bit more intuitive, but with some missing functionality (hey, it is in Beta - so some things are still being developed.) - like wall posts.

If all my friends were on facebook and google+ I would likely be using G+ to put up posts and communicate with them.

Probably the weirdest functionality (perhaps its because it is beta so the community is small, a sampling as it were) is that you can actually chat with anyone on there you want to (as long as they are set up and willing to talk back) - the best examples from my experience being web-celebs Scott Johnson, Patrick Beja, Brian Ibbit, Tom Merrit, Brian Dunnaway, Randy Delux, Veronica Belmont, Felicia Day and more. They post, you can comment, and its essentially a discussion. The circles allows you to easily opt to have posts visible to different groups so you can manage your fuctionality.

I must say though, they are surely going for a monopoly here. competing against Facebook and Twitter - they need to bring something new, or something thats a necessity or else they will only get a handful of subscribers I think.

Anyway, here are some links from other blogs that piqued my interest:

Computer game sales numbers...

I haz a crown. Scroink!
Im listening to episode #199 of The Instance - and their discussion of record game sales had me go googling... and I stumbled across a wikipedia page that got me thinking!!

>linky<

I as impressed by some of the numbers from the more recent consoles, then I seen the Wii... 76M sales of Wii Fit - when other consoles are topping out at like 20M...

Then I got to the mention of Angry Birds... 250M... I guess mobile phones are truly a good platform for gaming now! That is insane!

Recent Accomplishments. Stuff I have been doing!

Its been a bit quiet on the geekery front the last week or two. I have been listening excessively to episodes of The Instance as I go about doing my job, but I thought I would put a summary of some of our activities here :)

1) Web design: My business site is now up: Frozen-Monkey Web-Design. (albheit still under construction.) The site of my first customer is also up - RCS Wind Services. I am enjoying doing the web design work, it can be fiddly - but I have done enough websites between hobbies and uni now that I have some experience and am building up a portfolio.

2) Jam Making: Me and the Mrs took the kids to local(ish) fruit farm and got a metric f-ton of strawberries, and decided to make the into Jam using our Kenwood Bread Maker. I must say, yummier jam I haz a tasted not!

3) Wine Making: Were turnin into a proper Good Life family here... Jam... Bread... now making our own wine. We picked up a starter kit from Tesco to brew 6 bottles in a week, aswell as slapping a batch of strawberrys together to ferment to make some strawberry wine for christmas time. Its quite entertaining. We have a lot of brewing stuff that has been passed to us from family - we are quite keen on putting it to use - there are a load of brewing websites about - although finding an actual brewer shop to get supplies from in person is a different matter...

Oh yeah, I have also been playing lots (too much?) of Transport Tycoon... Ive not been allowed to play WOW because its too time consuming, but we both tend to collapse on the couch in the evenings regardless and do nothing, so I have just been playing this... Pretty easy once you get the hang of things... (assuming you let building whilst paused be allowed...)

Stoo's Reviews. Star Wars: Episode 3 - Revenge of The Sith.

I must admit... I want that outfit!
Well, I watched this one today. I reckon it is my favourite of the new 3 - but it sure does offer a different viewing experience from Episode 1. Where Episode 1 was aimed at Kids - this one I had to send the kid out the room at parts, and at other parts that I thought were not so bad, he run away and hid (E.G Sidius V Windu lightening face melty.)

My sole complaint about this installment has to be Vader at the end... NOooooooooooooooo oooh shiney. Considering I have been in the presence of some manipulative mofos in my life, none were so blatantly obvious than Palpatine with Annakin... its like... WTF dude, open your eyes! Hehe.

Its interesting actually how the Deathly Hallows pt 1 of Harry Potter follows this installment... watch them both back to back and see what comminalities you can find ;)

Edit: Wow, that was a rather random and fragmented stream of comments... Oh well, deal!

Stoo's Reviews. Transport Tycoon Deluxe, nostalgia gaming?

Transport Tycoon came out circa 1995 if I remember correctly. It is not a particularly exciting game, yet for some reason I find it quite... addicting.

Well, I downloaded it courtesy of the linky previously mentioned and fired it up.

The open source version of this game works quite well. There are numerous customisable options so you can play at a reasonable resolution etc. I set it up and went for it... I managed to play for about 2 hours, but I kinda "won" (Has an income stream around 100k a year, and no real objective or competitors.) With no set objective to win without competitors it is quite a boring game... you can challenge yourself to take on certain objectives, but overall - its pointless (moreso than most games that is). I am not that keen on playing with competitors - they tend to be too quick/efficient and if you want any chance of beating them you have to physically block their routes...

Anyway, give it a go if your into these kind of asset management games, because as far as they go - this is a good one.

Nostalgia says 8/10 - actuality is 6/10 in my opinion.

Star Wars: Episode 1 & 2 - comments

So me and the Squish-Monster have been watching Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones.

What can I say? I put these on because they were more tailored to children... but I must say - Jared fell asleep during Episode 1 and scampered about the house uninterested for the latter half of Episode 2. I enjoyed the films - as long as Annakin "Nooooooo"walker and JarJar Binks were not on screen.

Now, it must be about 10 years since I seen episode 1, and I only seen 2&3 when they were released in the cinema... I have been enjoying the fancier graphics compared to the first, and the plot was fine, and I really enjoy the fight scenes in the new 3 - especially Darth Maul ^.^

I may go as a Jedi at halloween :p It only occured to me today that I have exacty the same facial hair as Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan) and I often have my hair up the same way >.> All I need is a brown robe and Im sorted :p

Thats it for now. Good movies, some real downer points, and some great points, Id give them 7 out of 10 - good entertainment, but nothing provoking in anyway (Unlike Black Hawk down that I watched the other day and it makes me feel sad that I am no longer working in engineering that is tied to equipment used for the forces, but something much more mundane.)

Old School Games: A source!

The link I tried to put up in the Cyberdemon post yesterday - which was provided by Mozillas HTML5 Evengalist, Christian Heilmann (@codepo8 on twitter) - but the link is now down, but I was given a very nice link by a friend of his on facebook (I wont name names in case he doesn't want to be named).

http://osgameclones.com/

Im just looking at this list and drooling of the possibilities of playing old games (even some I never got round to playing) and putting up some reviews on them.

I think the ones that catch my eyes the most have to be:

Doom,
Doom II,
UFO Enemy Unkown - Aka XCOM: UFO Defense.
Planescape Torment (I never played this before but it looked good.)
Transport Tycoon

Im sure there is probably more I would love to do aswell. (Commander Keen! Weee!)...

Doom - The Cyberdemon!

Random post... I had a flashback to when I first played the original Doom - must have been circa 1993... just before I had a sound card. I would have been 11. This guy scared the everliving fuck outta me...

Back then we were running a 286 PC with a 20MB hard drive, and no sound card. The Doom Games were 15MB and came on floppy disks... If you got past the challenge of getting it on your hard drive - it was AWESOME. We did not have a sound card either, so the PC's internal speaker provided all the sounds... Usually the first sign this guy was near was Brrrowuuup, BrEeeeeeeeeewww! and that was you almost dead, or very dead...

Nostalgia. Oh, whilst Im mentioning Doom - here is a HTML 5 version - Doom for your web-browser basically. The page is missing as of the time of this posting, but it worked last week - so hopefully it will be back soon!

On a side note - this has inspired me to try to do some posts about games from my youth :)

The Instance, ah - the joys :)

I have been listening to some old episodes of the instance as I go about my rounds, driving from site to site as part of the internship. I must say, it has been a good giggle. The news may be old - but the entertainment value is as good as ever. As is the nostalgia value.

I have been putting together some notes from the shows as I go, as a while ago I decided that it would be awesome to get a list of episodes with nice short decriptions and bullet points of the main content that can be referenced, as well as other info like hosts, run time, and links to the episode blog and audio file.

I now have the latest 4 on my HTC, ready for my trip to Glasgae tomorrow. God help me, I been struggling coping with the drive to/from edinburgh... I better hit the sack!

Another day in the Internship

So, I have been working at an internship for two weeks now at a local company that has sites distributed throughout Scotland. At the minute the work is not hard. In fact, the toughest part about it is trying to find some of the sites as they are literally houses with rooms converted into offices, and sometimes there are patients living in them that I must contend with.

Well, having gotten most of the city sites out of the way - I must say, I am rather enjoying the more remote sites. Today I took a drive along the country roads out to Aylith, via Meigle and past Glamis through to Forfar. I ended up cutting the trip short as the Mrs needed me to come watch the kids - so Im currently sat at home working on the paperwork that comes with the position (the downside of it I guess! - lots of documentation.). I must admit though, it was very relaxing, driving about down the quiet country roads, listening to some Sonata Artica and Nightwish. Very chillaxing, if only every day at work was like this!

I have been trying to tag all the places I go to on FourSquare - but I have come to the conclusion that the Android App SUCKS... IF I manage to get a GPS signal to find out the local area, it can take several minutes for it to show - and there doesn't seem to be any way to refresh your location save hitting refresh on the places page, after using the google maps App to pinpoint my location...

More later. Work to do.

Stoo's Reviews. Star Wars: Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back.

Noooooooooo....
The Empire Strikes back.

Yep, watching the next movie today so I thought I would take more notes.

Off the bat: Luke looks OLD - but then this installment is a few years later and he had a Car Crash. I think the new look makes him look much more rugged and tougher - a good move from the last movie.

A much bigger budget is also apparent. Its like going from Old Star Trek to Star Trek 2009 - big flashy things and quality jump.

Haha, Han Solo is a douch... but a caring one about his friends i guess :p even knowingly sacrifices a "Tang tang??" to go find him. Aww.

Interesting... Luke suspended (somehow) in that... things cave. (lets call it a Yeti...) - and his face is all smashed in... Why do I get the impression that was a cover up for the scarring? Also... why didn't he just stay in the cave? Yeti burgers!

Nomnom bedofinnards...

And them medical droids freak the fuck out of me... reminds me of getting your ship blown up in Xwing...

Ah, incest. The latin word for re-entry...

Vader Kill count: = 1.

Umm... how did they get those AT-AT Walkers onto the planet?? Anyway. Boom Boom booooomage!

Jebus... how do they get the resources for all their battles?! Everyone that flies into battle with Luke dies (Except Red 5, cos he is awesomesauce) I think when Obi Wan tells him the force is an energy field that is drawn from all life - he must have meant by sacrificing them - like in Black & White... hehe.

Rocks! Rocks! Rocks! Hahaha, silly little tie fighters.

Trees! Trees! Trees! Dinosaur! AArrgh! hehehe

Oh no... I just remembered Yoda is about to appear... Senile Yoda is just irritating...

MMm. Found someone you have!

Ah, Emoerir Palpatine. Stopped using the Oil of Olay I see! you should go see them fellas from Star Trek: Insurrection.

Ooh, a Wookie Crossbow! Aint seen one of them outside Star Wars Galaxies :o

Yoda bigging it up for the geek crew there - crude matter, matter not *wiggles lukes muscle*.

Vader kill count: 2 - does he ever kill his enemies outside of flying a Tie-Advanced?!

Huh, torture works...

Cowardly imperial commander is cowardly... using Leia as a human shield... how apparently bin ladenesque...

FYI: The child lost interest long ago. Not enough explosions :p although Chewy is being called "Puppy! puppy! puppy!

Join Vader and bring order to the Galaxy? That doesn't sound so bad daddy!

Dont fancy those friction burns from the tube-slide... Oh no siree bob!

Back to the medi-droids! and teehee at the Oh Noes stare from the admiral as the Falcon hyperspaced out.

I wanna know... where the hell are they at the end? Outside the Galaxy? Is that possible? StarGate says bad idea....

Anyway, fun film - again, been like a decade since I seen it last!

Stoo's Reviews. Star Wars: Episode 4 - A New Hope.

So a mate gave me the box set for Episodes 4-6 the other day, and I finally got around to sitting down with my son to watch... and I cant help but document my thoughts as we watch. The last time I seen these was at the cinema when the remastered versions were shown. I have been enjoying it so far, but a few things have popped up... And it is all Family Guys fault...

Heres a running commentary of my thoughts as I watch, and my son stuffs his face with grapes watching the explosions...

"But I was gonna go to Toshley station to get Power Convertors" - Waah waah waah, say hello to the main protoganist folks...

So many dead Jawas...
#Winning! - they do remind me of the Dinkdink disneyland folks from Spaceballs - I guess they modelled them well in Spaceballs :p

"Dont worry he knows a few manouvers"... *continue flying straight*

Random fact: Harrison Ford was working as a cleaner when Lucas stumbled upon him and auditioned him for the role of Solo.

I remember playing a demo of the star wars FPS game made in the late 90s - those floor scuttering things... BOOM! Batteries!

And how come Han and Luke are such expert marksmen - yet elite trained troopers cant shoot for shit ^.^ - the issue with all action movies i guess hehe.

"Im here with your R2 unit and Ben Konobie"
"Ben Konobie?! Where is he!"

- huh? she doesnt know a Ben Konobie... does she?

Trash chute by an endless corridor! (save after 6 foot its clearly a printed board :D) - and you gotta love how Luke can be yoinked under the trash when to everyone else the ground is solid, even where he was.

Thinking about it - the start of the film seemed to follow on quite well from Episode 3, or at least what I remember of it... I dont know if I have the willpower to watch the first 3, although the choreography is great!

visited IMDB, wow - 35 year old movie almost...

"cover me Porkins"... Insert fat pilot... okay...

Teehee, fun film. Has been a long time since I last watched, but fun times :)

Now, back to the dreaded housework!! And screamy kids.

Google maps playtime! creating custom maps with multiple map-pins.

Not to be out dated - Google have now made a tutorial on this! Enjoy.

 --------------------------------  Original Post  ------------------------

I had been wondering for a while how to get google maps to display multiple pins. I wanted to be able to put multiple addresses in, so that I could for example track holiday destinations or destinations I need to travel to and from with my new job. I thought in order to do this I was going to have to make use of the Google Maps API in order to generate a map filled with pins from a pre-assembled list of map coordinates - or addresses thrown into the Geocoder API...

But horray, its so much simpler!

If you log into your Google account when on Google maps (Come now, you know you have a google account... any self respecting geek is going to be using somewhere to hold their RSS feeds...) you have a function on the left of the screen called "my maps".

Adding a map to Google Maps.

Simple as that, you can create your own custom map. Now whenever you search a location on the map - you can click the map-pin and "save to map". When you view your "my map" which it is saved in, you can see the map pin - and edit details about it such as the location (dragging it) name or note.

I have spent WAY too much time fiddling with this...

Confessions of a Geek:

Something I only just realised last night: I really wanna watch all the Star Wars movies - and get my son to watch them alongside, I think it would be a fun few days of movie going...

The catch: I have not got a single piece of star wars stuff in my house... no movies, no toys, posters, not even a picture on my computer...

Zilcho Star Warsness...

Weird huh?

I admit I am more of a star trek fan than a star wars fan, but I always liked them (well, with some exceptions in the new 3). Ah well, I think a friend is donating me his collectors edition of the original 3 on DVD since he has multiple copies... thats a good start :)

I suppose we have the option of going to the cinema to see it all when it is re-released in 3D, but I dont think Im willing to line the already padded pockets of Mr Lucas re-scrounge of the genre... even if we did go to see it, we would watch it in 2D :p

Mini GeekGasm - The Axel.

So - my placement began a few days ago - and I have been doing the hardware audit for the company that is employing me, and on said job - I have come across a device called the "AXEL". It is described as a "Thin Client" - what it basically does is act like a pc server on a network. You hook a mouse, keyboard and monitor into this device thats smaller than your typical modem - and can be mounted to your monitor - and voila - you (with some fiddling with settings etc to set it all up) basically have a virtual PC thats connected to a hub PC on the network. I think these are fantastic.

When I first came across them it was in a small office where there was one main PC and three workstations around the room... They all work seperately using the main PC to host their services. I want one! In our new house we have a monitor in the kitchen that is there to be connected up to a base unit so that you have a working PC in the kitchen for entertainments or web access, recipes, etc etc - with the thin client terminal - I could have this working without having to sort a seperate base unit for it... Considering I have seen these things going on eBay for like £10-20 (up to hundreds - Im guessing the capabilities of the devices are tied to some specification within, and cheap can be nasty.) so for a very simple access terminal to get recipes etc, it looks awesome :D

How wave energy could destroy the world as we know it

Also known as WTF physics :p

So - had a drunken night with family around last night, and one of the topics of conversation was generating electricity, and how renewable power sources cost more than they save - they are merely subsidised to make them affordable. Anyway, the topic turned to Wave energy and my brother in law (to be) popped up with a pen and paper and started some diagrams to explain something.

Background: The moon has an effect on the tides at present - it rotates around the earth and with it, pulls the current with it. The force of said wall of water has the effect of slowing the earths rotational speed so that 2 extra seconds are added to the each year (Or something along those lines. A tiny amount of time in the way of things, but it is an effect) - apparently - with the barriers and technology that  would harness wave energy - the effects are sped up, due to the current from this water being blocked when it tries to flow back - which would counter the slowing of the earths rotation. In essence we are leeching energy from the earths Kinetic energy of the rotation. Scary stuff. Accurate? I dont know, correct? Bugger knows... I did find an interesting Article on the effects of the Earth and Moon on tides...

But none the less - entertaining party banter!

There was also a half hour on economics and how Scotland will go down the shitter if SNP is left to roam unchecked ^.^

I <3 my family, haha :)

Also - had a few friends round, and I managed to nab a deadpool comic off of Ebay that my mate has been trying to get a hold of for years ^.^ yey!

And that is how you associate Deadpool with renewable energy sources. And bad governments that happen to just be the lesser of 3 evils :o

Freedom! Exams over.

That is the final exam over and done with. Assuming nothing went drastically wrong, I am now the proud owner of a Bsc in Applied Computing on top of my BEng in Electronics & Electrical Engineering.

Woot!

It feels good to be free, but my agenda is no less busy. I have a meeting tomorrow for my summer work placement as an IT assistant at a local housing company. I will most likely be starting on Monday. In addition to this, I am going to be starting a web-design business to work on part time over the summer and after I start back at uni after the summer. I have a few projects to get on the go, and I am quite looking forward to getting started on them!

The witcher 2 collectors edition is pre-ordered. Little treat for me and the missus!

Anyway - we finally got around to tidying/unpacking from the move in 2 weeks ago. Lots still to be done, so I am off back to it!

The Witcher 2 - Collectors edition.

So yeah, The Witcher 2 comes out next week. I must say, after an impulse purchase if a discounted copy of the collectors edition of The Witcher back in Jan 2008, The Witcher is one of the best games I have played in years.

As you can imagine: I am quite keen to get my mits on the sequel. Now, heres an interesting thing. There is a preorder only collectors edition (I.E - order the collectors edition for the release date and you get it - after that date it is unavailable.) the cost of the collectors edition is... quite a lot. £80+ in most places (At least - in all the respectable places) - a bit much... but I think we might go for it, we liked the first one that much.

The original was some of the only entertainment that my wife and I had when we moved to Somerset for work back in January 2008 when she was pregnant with our son. We would lay in bed all day and play The Witcher, so we have a soft spot for the game.

Heres the craziest part though...

People are selling copies of the collectors edition on Ebay (Ordering a number of copies and putting them on ebay to see how many they can sell.) - £120 each... and people are buying them...

Is that nuts? I dont know...

I remember when World of Warcraft first came out - there was a lot of copies on the shelves around here - and down in the south of England they sold out... I actually managed to buy up at least a dozen copies and sell them on Ebay for a tidy profit... I made some money - they got their game shipped in from another part of the country the day after buying... it seemed a fair deal to me :) - Im seriously tempted to buy a copy or two of the collectors edition as an experiment, give it a week from launch then stick them on Ebay... It is a big gamble though, and it is a lot of money... in fact its a prohibitive amount... there is a big margain for loss...

hmm...

I shall ponder on this more before I head into town and pre-order it for £72 with student discount :D
